Indonesia is a Republic which comprises 17,508 islands, and with an estimated population of around 237 million people, it is the world's fourth most populous country. The country shares land borders with Malaysia, East Timor and Papua New Guinea. Other neighboring countries include Singapore, Australia, the Philippines and the Indian territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Across its many islands, Indonesia consists of distinct ethnic, linguistic, and religious groups. As a unitary state and a nation, Indonesia has developed a shared identity defined by a national language, ethnic diversity, religious pluralism within a majority Muslim population. Indonesia is a hotbed of biodiversity. Indeed it sits on the western edge of the Pacific Rim, a seismically active area known as the "Ring of Fire". Despite its large population and densely populated regions, Indonesia has vast areas of wilderness that support the world's second highest level of biodiversity (after Brazil) and its flora and fauna is a mixture of Asian and Australasian species. Indonesia is second only to Australia in its degree of endemism, with 26% of its 1,531 species of bird and 39% of its 515 species of mammal being endemic. Setiawan Asegaff (Indonesia)
