The most picturesque place on the island is Pedra De Lume, crater of an antique volcano, where you can find an artificial tunnel excavated in 1804 to allow the extraction of salt. The base of the crater, which is at sea level, allows the surfacing of marine water even if it is at 1 km from the beach.

The saline of St. Maria, about 1 km from the city, even if not in use, are still a site worth visiting, as well as Vila de Espargos, whose name comes from the spontaneous vegetation of that area.
The port o Palmeira, which allow container ships to anchor, has a desalinizzazione systemand a lobster breeding.
Other sites worth visiting are Algodeiro, a small oasis, Buracona, a natural pool with water that is constantely renewed, Fontona, Puf, Danfior e Calheta
Funda.

Close to the old lighthouse, Fiura is good place to admire the force of the waves and to fish a great variety of fish. Sal is one of the islands closest to the African Continent, that is why it has the same climatic conditions as those, on the same latitude, of that part of the continent.
